OK, this is going to sound strange. Yesterday, I stopped for gas and pulled up behind a newish Challenger R/T with a black vinyl roof - and it actually looked good! I hate fabric/vinyl roofs on just about everything, but somehow it actually fits the '70s vibe of the car and didn't seem at all out of place. The guy also had louvers in the back window and some retro looking wheels, so I have to say he had a theme going and it looked pretty decent/tasteful.
Didn't take a picture, but I just Googled it, and apparently vinyl roofs on Challengers isn't an unknown thing. Hadn't seen one before and was unaware of it, but with the demise of the Town Car, this may have the unlikely distinction of being the only car on the market that can successfully pull off the look.
It looked pretty close to this:

The '69-'74 generation was available with a factory-option vinyl roof, so it really does fit these well.

Not terrible. I wouldn't do it to my car.

It fits the retro design pretty well. What I've realised though is that Dodge has never made a convertible version. There have been aftermarket conversions though.

I wouldn't do it, but it certainly looks better than the Cadillacs that dealers are sticking vinyl roofs on. A CTS does not look good with a vinyl roof.

I wouldn't do it either, but it definitely doesn't look bad. You need a kind of upright/squared-off C-pillar to make this work, and newer Cadillacs and Lincolns explicitly don't have those.

Exactly. That roof line is much better suited to it than cars with a more modern look. And don't get me started on the fake convertible tops.

Something I have always said: "most cars look terrible with vinyl roofs, the challenger is one of the few exceptions."
